President of Romania
HE Klaus Iohannis is the current President of Romania, in office since December 21, 2014. He became the president after a surprise win in the 2014 presidential election where he garnered 54.43% of the votes. Prior to becoming the president he had served as leader of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania from 2002 to 2013. Before becoming a full-time politician he worked as a physics teacher and a school inspector. As a politician his first major victory came in 2000 when he was elected the mayor of the city of Sibiu representing the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania. In this role he helped to turn the city into one of Romania’s most popular tourist destinations, an achievement that earned him the trust and respect of the citizens. He also tightened the city administration and established contacts with foreign officials and investors. A highly popular mayor, he was re-elected by landslides in 2004, 2008 and 2012. His political aspirations grew with time and he became a member of the National Liberal Party in 2013 and was soon made the party’s president. In 2014, he became the party’s main candidate for the presidential elections and successfully beat his opponent, Prime Minister Victor Ponta, by a wide margin to become the country’s president.
